News50 YEAR PREMIERSHIP REUNION

50 YEAR PREMIERSHIP REUNION

On Saturday 15 June a group of players from the 1973, 1974 & 1975 triple premiership sides gathered at Crathern Park Trinity Beach to celebrate their feats from 50 years ago.  Alan (Piggy) Jones emceed the lunch and he and Kel Luscombe reminisced about their era when they were a force on the field and best mates off it.  Attendees also included players Peter Amesbury, Warren (Mudcrab) Skeene, Rudi Gregoric, Norm Miller, Maurie Lancaster, Choc Lundy, Tom Jones, Peter Moore, Charlie Kazamias, Steve Hodges, Frank Lanzo and Ross Bowden, club supporters Ken Baker, Barry Morris and Val (Morris) Henderson along with Judy Wilkie, Janice Evans and Maureen Gray.

The celebrations were mainly about Kel Luscombe, who was only in his early 20’s at the time.  However, as the Captain and Coach, he was well respected, because he mentored and addressed all players with influence and a big heart.   He said that he wasn’t sure how he ended up being the coach, but his great communication and tactical skills along with a strong football brain, he could read the play and make changes on the field when needed and trusted the players to show their strength. The team played hard and fast, achieving a winning streak of 34 games undefeated, which demonstrated the leadership and talent of the team and its players.  Team manager Keith Wilkie was a great support for the team providing guidance and leadership to ensure the players showed great team spirit.

The premiership players and their families celebrated their achievements on Saturday with fond memories of their heyday. They also reminisced and remembered those that were no longer here to join them,  represented by their loved ones.  Chatting about the off field antics including raft races, progressive dinners and cent sales as social events to raise funds for the club, a social gathering rarely occurred without Keith Wilkie playing music and Neville (Hank) Williams singing some country music.   They visited the current Senior team to give them a pep talk before their game and spent the afternoon watching footy, laughing and catching up.

The Centrals Trinity Beach Australian Rules and Sporting Club Board and members would like to thank all those players, family and supporters who attended the celebration and came down to the club to see the reunion attendees, it was a wonderful day with lots of new memories created!
