Get to know Perko

Mark joins our club after an illustrious 19-year tenure as General Manager of football at Aspley Hornets FC, where he led the club to remarkable successes. Under his leadership, the Hornets became Queensland’s most successful AFL club, boasting over 1200 registered players across all age groups from under 6s to Masters. The year 2023 marked a standout season for the club, with multiple achievements across its teams.

Mark was instrumental in introducing and developing the Women’s program at Aspley, culminating in their current top position on the QAFL ladder for both Senior and reserves in 2024. In the previous year, the Senior men’s team secured a back-to-back grand final victory in the QAFL, while the reserve men’s team clinched the flag. Additionally, the Senior women’s team finished as runners-up in their competition, with the women’s reserve team securing third place.

Mark’s extensive experience includes a notable playing career with the Collingwood Football Club from 1987 to 1990, debuting during the inaugural AFL season. Following his playing career, he transitioned to coaching, notably leading North Heidelberg to a premiership in the Diamond Valley League in 1994. His coaching journey continued with roles at Myrtleford and Beechworth in country Victoria before relocating to Brisbane in 2002 to join the Sandgate Hawks as football manager. In 2003, he moved to Aspley Hornets, where he played a pivotal role in their ascent from second division AFLQ to competing in three grand finals in the NEAFL, ultimately claiming the premiership in 2014.

Mark’s arrival at our club positions us strongly to continue setting the benchmark in both male and female competitions. His wealth of experience and proven leadership are invaluable assets as we look ahead to further successes and growth.
