Keep the fire burning

Although the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs had a BYE during this year’s Indigenous Round, our club still embraced the spirit and significance of the occasion by commissioning a special art piece by our Indigenous artist, Nikita Herd. This decision wasn’t just about celebrating the round—it was about honoring a deep-rooted connection to the cultural heritage that shapes us all.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud!” resonates profoundly with our values. It is a call to maintain, practice, and pass on our cultural fire to future generations. Even though we weren’t on the field during the Indigenous Round, our commitment to this message remains unwavering. That’s why we’ve chosen to wear our Indigenous jerseys for the remainder of the season, showcasing our dedication to building and maintaining a connection with the many diverse cultures represented in our club.

The Indigenous Jersey, designed by Nikita Herd, is a powerful representation of this year’s NAIDOC theme. The fire depicted in the design symbolises the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures—a flame that has been passed down through generations despite the many challenges faced. It’s more than just a jersey; it’s a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Wearing this jersey is a small but impactful gesture that allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to feel a deep connection to our club and their cultures. But it also does more—it offers all Australians a chance to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue. By donning these jerseys, we create a space where the wisdom and contributions of Indigenous Peoples are fully valued and respected. It reminds us to be Blak, Loud, and Proud of Indigenous identity, empowering us to stand tall in our heritage.

As a club, the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs are immensely proud to acknowledge and share the cultural heritage of the land on which we play our beloved game. Through our Indigenous jerseys, we carry forward the fire of our ancestors, ensuring it continues to burn brightly for generations to come. This season, and every season, we are committed to keeping that fire alive, celebrating the diversity and strength that defines us, both on and off the field.
